DESCRIPTION

Well, that's stinks because I don't know either. The Tater Chips are one of the most eaten chips in the United States. In the U.S. alone, we've consumed 1.5 million potato chips a year. That's 10,000 pounds of potatoes to make them. The potato chip was invented in 1853 and has been America's number one snack food for more than 50 years. In two hours, a factory can make 7,000 pounds of potato chips.

HISTORY

The man who invented potato chips was George Cum, who was both African-American and Native American, and a chef employed as a chef at Moon Lake Lodge --an elegant resort in Saratoga Springs, New York. And getting complaints from a customer about thick, soggy fried potatoes, Crum wanted to teach the patron a lesson, so he sliced a new batch of potatoes as thin as he possibly could, and then fried them until they were hard and crunchy. Finally, to top them off, he added a generous heaping of salt. To Crum's surprise, the dish ended up being a hit with the patron and a new snack was born.

RECIPIES

  1. Place potato slices into a large bowl of cold water as you slice. Drain, and rinse, then refill the bowl with water, and add the salt. Let the potatoes soak in the salty water for at least 30 minutes. Drain, then rinse and drain again.
  2. Heat oil in a deep-fryer to 365 degrees F (185 degrees C). Fry potato slices in small batches. Once they start turning golden, remove and drain on paper towels. Continue until all of the slices are fried. Season with additional salt if desired.
